Château Meyre

The estate

The first written trace of Meyre dates from 1652. William Franck, whose Traité sur les vins du Médoc first appeared in 1824, has it in 1845 as Martreau, under Estève, and by 1853 the name reads Marteau (Meyre). Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, print it as Château-Meyre among the crus bourgeois supérieurs of Avensan from 1874. In their edition of 1886 it had belonged to the Estève family or their descendants since 1825, with 60 hectares, 15 of them vines, and the grower won a medal at Paris in 1878. By 1922 it had been split in 2.

In 1990 the estate was bought by Mme Lenôtre, wife of the Paris pastry chef, who worked with Jean-Luc Pouteau, named best sommelier in the world in 1983, and added 2 hectares in the Margaux appellation. Since 1998 its owner has been M. Hetrakul, from Thailand. The vineyard is 20 hectares, 18 of Haut-Médoc at Avensan and 2 of Margaux, on Quaternary gravel, sand and silt with veins of clay, farmed organically and certified by Ecocert. It is planted 44% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, picked by machine except the Petit Verdot, which is picked by hand, and the wine is aged 18 months, 12 of them in barrel. The Margaux is sold as Gallen de Château Meyre, and the house is also a hotel of 9 rooms. It was a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in the classifications of 2020 and 2025.
