Château Poitevin

The estate

René Poitevin began growing vines in the 1950s, alongside the family bakery and other farming. In 1991 Guillaume Poitevin, trained in viticulture and oenology at Bordeaux, took up where his father and grandfather had left off and set out to enlarge the property by making its own wine. He runs it with his wife Natacha, a small team and the oenologist Antoine Médeville. The estate joined the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois in 2003, won the Coupe des Crus Bourgeois in 2012 and took the mention Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2018, a rank confirmed in the classifications of 2020 and 2025.

The family now farms 41 hectares at Jau-Dignac-et-Loirac, on Gironde gravel over a clay subsoil, planted to Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon for the white. The path to organic was steady: Terra Vitis in 2015, Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms) at level 3 in 2018, conversion from 2021, and the whole 2023 vintage certified organic. The wines age 9 to 15 months, depending on the cuvée. Besides Château Poitevin, red and white, there are Château Moulin de Canhaut; Insula Amphora, from parcels picked and destemmed by hand and fermented in amphorae; Lamothe Pontac, raised without new wood; and Poitevin Par Nature, without added sulfites.
