Château Escot

The estate

Escot stands at Lesparre-Médoc, on the old commune of Saint-Trélody, and its name is medieval: it meant a collector of taxes. The wine has a long record. Charles Cocks lists Château-Escot under the Lostau family in Bordeaux, ses environs et ses vins in 1850; in 1858 a local notable, M. d’Armailhac, placed it among the crus bourgeois, and Cocks and Édouard Féret, in Bordeaux et ses vins, the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, kept it among the crus bourgeois of Lesparre from 1868 to 1922. Their English edition of 1883 describes the ancient patrimony of the Lostau family: a domain of 100 hectares, 33 of them vines, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and to a gros cabernet chosen from the vineyard of Mouton-d’Armailhacq, with a bouquet they likened to that of Margaux. By 1886 it had passed to E. Plisson, and by 1922 to Eyquem.

In 2019 it was bought by 2 investors from the Czech Republic: Richard Morávek, founder of the property group Redstone, and Vít Bartošek, a wine merchant and sommelier who is the managing partner. Sonia Ozanne is managing director and Fabien Faget technical manager. The vines, 40 years old on average, lie in 3 communes: Lesparre, mostly sand; Civrac, sand, clay and limestone; and Saint-Christoly, clay, gravel, pebbles and fine sand. Château Escot is 50% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The estate also makes a second red Médoc, a rosé and, from 0.89 hectares of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris planted in 2020, a white Bordeaux. Escot was a Cru Bourgeois in the classification of 2020 and moved up to Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 2025.
