Bordeaux tells stories about itself. These are the ones I put on trial.
Each case takes one claim the region repeats, sets it against the record, and returns a verdict. The evidence is named so that you can check it yourself: the edition, the page, the year. 70 cases are planned. Each appears first on Instagram and then here, in full.

In 1855 the Bordeaux brokers ranked Mouton a Second Growth. By 1868 the trade's own directory had given it a price row of its own. If the book was making Mouton's case for half a century, what did the Rothschild campaign that ended in 1973 actually buy?

Was the Maharajah of Saint-Estèphe a fraud?
Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel put pagodas above his cellars at Cos d'Estournel, and the Bordeaux trade called him a nabob. The charge has stood since 1849: a showman who built his way into the Second Growths. Did the towers buy the rank? The books of his own lifetime kept the score.

Can a classified château die?
In 1867 a Bordeaux writer counted 5 Third Growths at Margaux, Dubignon among them. In 1868 the trade's directory reprinted the brokers' list of 1855 with 13 Thirds and no Dubignon. How does a classified growth leave the list, and can a classified château die?

Can a château come back from the dead?
The Bordeaux directory printed Ferrière's Third Growth rank for 54 years without once describing the wine, and from 1952 to 1992 the only Ferrière sold was a token bottling. In 1992 it came back. What, exactly, had the brokers of 1855 ranked?

Does great wine need centuries?
In 1824 the Bordeaux trade's handbook had no Montrose in it. In 1855 the brokers ranked the Saint-Estèphe vineyard a Second Growth, 40 years after its first vines. No new name has come into the list that way since. Why not?

Could the Classification be appealed?
In 1845 the trade's own handbook gave Château Cantemerle its most admiring page outside the First Growths, and no price. In 1855 the brokers left it off the Classification. What did the Baronne de Villeneuve-Durfort have to prove, and could a list meant to be final take it?

Does a château need a classification?
Sociando-Mallet, on a gravel rise at Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, has never held a rank, and in 2003 Jean Gautreau refused one. The trade's own books, from a ship's captain in 1845 to a court docket in 2007, show what a Bordeaux classification actually buys.

Does the Classification rank the soil?
In 1767 a buyer renamed a Saint-Julien estate after himself, and in 1855 the growth bearing his name went into the Classification as a Fourth. Henri Martin spent 40 years buying vineyard out of 9 classified growths for Château Gloria. What did the brokers of 1855 actually rank?

Can a name outlive the man?
In 1853 the Bordeaux trade's handbook ranked Palmer a Fourth Growth and printed its owner as a mortgage bank. The Englishman who named it had died broke in London. In 1855 the brokers raised it to third, under his name. How does a name climb after its man is gone, and why did the bankers keep it?

Is there a second Margaux?
In 1844 Durfort-Vivens sold above Rauzan-Ségla, Lascombe and the contract price of Château Margaux. The trade's own handbook classed it a fourth growth. By the 1980s it sold like a fifth. Was there ever a second Margaux, and where did it go?

Did one inheritance split Pichon in two?
In 1850 a deed parted Pichon-Longueville among the old baron's heirs, and Pauillac dates Baron and Comtesse from it. The brokers of 1855 listed one Pichon. Since 1868 the directory has printed 2, in a table it said it copied word for word. When did Pichon become two?

Did the Revolution break up Léoville?
Château Léoville Las Cases says the French Revolution split Léoville into Las Cases, Poyferré and Barton, and on the same page credits a birthright. Which was it? And if Léoville was 3 estates by 1840, why did the classification of 1855 still print one?

Where is the château in Léoville Barton?
Léoville Barton, the Saint-Julien second growth the Barton family has held since 1826, has no house of its own: the one on its label is Langoa's. Bordeaux has long said a château helps make a great growth. Two centuries of records test what the absence cost.
