The Map of Bordeaux

The 44 appellation names INAO maps in the Gironde, drawn from its official areas and laid over one another the way they really lie. Touch any point and the map names every appellation whose area covers it.

Bordeaux is not 44 places side by side. It is 44 areas stacked on top of one another, and that is the part the posters never show.

Click any appellation and the panel lists every other name whose area covers the same ground, from the widest down to the narrowest. Switch from the communes to the delimited vineyard and each shape shrinks to the plots INAO has delimited for the name. Whether a given vine may carry a name is settled plot by plot, and the wine must still meet the rules of its cahier des charges. Pick a classification and the classified châteaux appear as pins: the Classification of 1855, the Saint-Émilion ranks of 2022, the Crus Classés de Graves and the Michelin selection, each pin leading to what has been written here about that estate. Narrow the map by territory or by the wine made, search for a name, and when you think you have it all in your head, the map drill in Study will tell you whether you do.

What each classification is, and every change it has been through

communes

What is drawn here is the aire géographique: the communes INAO’s map data names for each appellation. It is not the delimited parcel area, and where communes have merged since the data was drawn, the cahier des charges in force counts fewer. Inside these communes only part of the ground is planted, and only part of that is entitled to the appellation. The 44 are the names INAO maps for the Gironde: the AOCs and the named areas inside them, such as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and Graves Supérieures. The CIVB groups the current ones as 37 AOPs, and this site gives them 40 pages.
