Château Grand Brun

The estate

The Bruns keep marriage records back to 1846. Jean Brun, born in 1863, was a cooper who married Jeanne Chaigneau; Camille Brun managed Château Bernones before coming back to the family vines; and Charles Brun, who took over vines and cellar in 1935, was the first of the family to sell most of the wine in bottle. Jean-Pierre Brun began in 1970 as vineyard foreman on a Médoc estate and bought 1.6 hectares of his own. When the family land was divided in 1987, his brother Christian stayed at Château de Lauga and Jean-Pierre received 5 hectares; the name Château Grand Brun and the first vintage came in 1988. Olivier Brun has managed the estate since 2008, when the EARL Grand Brun was formed.

The family now works nearly 12 hectares. The Haut-Médoc is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, picked by hand and raised in vat and barrel in the family cellar at Cussac-Fort-Médoc, and the estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms). It also makes Les Chintes, as a red Bordeaux Supérieur and as a Bordeaux rosé. Grand Brun is a Cru Artisan du Médoc in the classification for the vintages 2022 to 2026.
