Château Péby Faugères

An estate that did not exist before 1998, made from the oldest Merlot at Faugères and named for the man who had owned it, and a Grand Cru Classé 14 years later.

The estate

Pierre-Bernard Guisez, known as Péby, owned Faugères with his wife Corinne from 1987. After his death the cuvée made from the estate’s oldest Merlot was given his name, and with the 1998 vintage it became a property in its own right. Silvio Denz bought Faugères and Péby Faugères together in 2005. The wine went from nothing to the classification in 14 years: absent from every Saint-Émilion list before 2012, it was promoted to Grand Cru Classé that year and confirmed in the list approved in September 2022.

The vineyard is about 7 hectares on the clay and limestone slope at Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, facing south and southeast, at 6,600 vines a hectare, with vines 45 years old on average, and the grand vin (the estate’s first wine) is Merlot alone. Conversion to organic farming began in 2017 and certification came with the 2020 vintage, along with Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms), level 3. Mario Botta, who designed the winery at Faugères, built Péby Faugères a second one of its own, inaugurated in 2021. Since 2009 the bottle has carried a blackbird and grapes in Lalique crystal, and the second wine is Le Merle de Péby Faugères, the blackbird of Péby.
