Château Magdelaine

The estate

Magdelaine was among the first vineyards Jean-Pierre Moueix added to his merchant house. He began buying vines in 1950, took Château La Fleur-Pétrus, then Magdelaine in 1952, and Château Trotanoy after it. Magdelaine was a Premier Grand Cru Classé B in every Saint-Émilion list from 1955 to 2006: those of 1955, 1969, 1986, 1996 and 2006.

Its neighbor was Château Bélair. In 1960 Jean-Pierre Moueix became its exclusive distributor, and in 2008 his son Christian and his grandson Edouard Moueix bought it and renamed it Bélair-Monange. In the classification of 2012 both estates were confirmed as first growths, and the INAO agreed to their fusion into a single property of 23.5 hectares; the list of 2012 names Bélair-Monange alone, and Magdelaine ended there as a wine of its own.
