Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix
How to read this
Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “zh” is the s in “measure”. “ahn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.
From the mid-1940s Jean-Pierre Moueix sold Petrus as its sole agent, and in 1961 its owner, Madame Edmond Loubat, left him a share of the estate.
The house
Jean-Pierre Moueix founded his house on the quai du Priourat, on the river at Libourne, in 1937, to sell the wines of the Right Bank. From the mid-1940s he was the sole agent of Petrus, whose owner, Madame Edmond Loubat, wanted it sold at the price of the first growths; when she died in 1961 she left him a share of the estate.
He began buying vines himself in 1950 with La Fleur-Pétrus, on the Pomerol plateau, then Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion in 1952 and Trotanoy and Lagrange in Pomerol in 1953. From 1962 his house farmed Latour à Pomerol, which Madame Loubat had bought in 1917.
His sons took different paths. Petrus belongs to the family of the elder, Jean-François, a branch separate from the merchant house. The younger, Christian, was put in charge at Petrus by his father in 1969. He bought La Grave in Pomerol in 1971, the first vineyard of his own, and Dominus in the Napa Valley in 1982. In 1983 the house filed the name Moueix as a mark in the United Kingdom and the United States, and in 1986 the name Jean-Pierre Moueix in Japan. Christian became president of the house in 1991. Jean-Claude Berrouet, who joined in 1964, came to be in charge of all the family’s vineyards and made 44 vintages of Petrus. Jean-Pierre Moueix died in 2003, at 90, and that year Christian’s son Edouard joined the house, of which he is now deputy managing director.
Under Christian the house kept buying. In 1999 it bought Château Certan-Giraud, kept only its highest parcels and named them Hosanna. It bought Château Bélair, in Saint-Émilion, in 2008, renamed it Bélair-Monange and in 2012 joined Magdelaine to it. Lafleur-Gazin, whose wine the house has made since 1976, has been the family’s since 2021. The house employs more than 140 people and sells more than 200 wines, among them, under exclusivity, Château Certan de May. In 2024 it took full ownership of Latour à Pomerol, after farming it for more than 60 years.
