Château Hosanna

The estate

Hosanna is a small vineyard with famous neighbors. Its 4.5 hectares sit in the middle of the Pomerol plateau, with Château Lafleur to the north, Petrus to the east, Château La Fleur-Pétrus to the west and Vieux Château Certan to the south. The ground has an old pedigree: it belonged to the estate of the de May family, who settled on the plateau in the 16th century and planted 1 of the first vineyards of the appellation there. Later it was part of Château Certan-Giraud. When Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix bought Certan-Giraud in 1999, the house kept only its highest parcels on the plateau and gave them a name of their own.

The ground is blue clay over red gravel, on the iron-rich subsoil the Libournais call crasse de fer. The vines are 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, 40 years old on average, and a good part of the Cabernet Franc goes back to 1956. The harvest is by hand and sorted by hand and then by machine, and the wine ferments in temperature-controlled vats of concrete and stainless steel before 16 to 18 months in French oak, 50% of the barrels new. The 2014, from a cooler, more classic year, which I tasted in October 2025, set ripe fruit against real energy and freshness, a reflection of the ground and of careful winemaking.
