Château Montviel

The estate

Catherine Péré-Vergé took over Montviel in 1985 and renovated it: a new vat room and barrel cellar, the house restored, the vineyard reworked. In 2002 she brought the vines of the châteaux Tristan, Feytit Lagrave and La Croix des Templiers together with those of Bellevue-Montviel, so that the estate now works 20 plots spread across the appellation. In 2019, at the request of her daughter, Anne Catherine Parent, the Vignobles Parent teams replaced the steel vats with temperature-controlled concrete and installed a cold exchanger 40 meters long, to chill the grapes for a soak before fermentation. The family also owns Château Le Gay and Château La Violette in Pomerol.

The estate has 10.5 hectares, 9.62 of them in production, on fine gravel and sandy silt, planted 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, 30 years old on average. The grapes are picked by hand in 2 passes in early September and soaked cold for 12 days in concrete, and the wine ages 18 months in barrel, 70% new. The yields are low, 17.5 hectoliters a hectare, and the selection is strict: the grand vin (the estate’s first wine) makes 16,000 bottles, while the second wine, La Rose Montviel, takes 50% to 60% of the crop.
