Château Bourgneuf

The estate

The Vayron family has owned Bourgneuf since 1840, and the 8th generation makes the wine: Frédérique Vayron has been in charge of the winemaking since 2008, after Xavier and Dominique Vayron, who inherited in the 1970s. The estate stands on the slope of the Pomerol plateau, on a southeast to northwest axis, and its 9 hectares run in 1 unbroken piece against the vineyard of Château Trotanoy. In 2007 pits were dug across the whole property to map it, and the ground changes down the slope in 3 bands: pure clay at the top, clayey sand to sandy clay in the middle and a very gravelly foot, all over a subsoil rich in iron.

The planting is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with vines 40 years old on average, and the blend follows the year rather than the planting: 80% Merlot in 2018 and 2019, 90% in 2023 and 2024. The estate has held Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms) at its top level, level 3, since 2019. Green harvesting and picking are done by hand, plot by plot, each at its own date, and the machine bought for the vineyard works between the rows, decompacts and aerates the soil in 1 pass, so as not to pack it down. The wine ferments in temperature-controlled cement vats, with the cap pushed down by hand, and ages 12 to 14 months in French oak, 35% of it new and the rest of 1 and 2 wines.

Bourgneuf keeps a low profile and consistently delivers serious, structured Merlot. The 2011, which I tasted in December 2025, had bright red fruit, spice and the clay-driven depth of Pomerol, with a little more tension and a little less opulence than the big vintages around it, and it was beautifully drinkable.
