Château Billeron Bouquey

The estate

Billeron Bouquey is 1 of the 4 châteaux of Vignobles Robin Lafugie, a family house at Saint-Hippolyte whose wine trade goes back to the Robins, merchants and coopers in Libourne in the 18th century, and to Pierre Lafugie in the 19th. Michel Robin married Janine Lafugie in 1956; Dominique Fugier has led the property since 1991, and Laurence joined in 2003, with Mathilde and Virginie. The family motto, Qualité passe Quantité, says what they are after. The vineyard, about 4 kilometers from Saint-Émilion, is planted 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on clay and limestone and sand.

The compound name is modern, but its 2 halves are 2 hamlets of Saint-Hippolyte, and the directories printed them side by side in every edition from 1868 to 1898. Édouard Féret, whose Les vins de l’arrondissement de Libourne appeared in 1897, gave the commune 286 inhabitants and 444 hectares, placed its wines among the second growths of Saint-Émilion, and listed Billerond under Béchaud at 20 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels), 2 times over, with Bouquey, Billeron and Petit-Bouquey among the artisan and peasant growths at 4 to 6 tonneaux each.

It is not a classified growth and does not try to behave like one. The 2022, which I tasted in February 2026 and again that May, has the depth and ripeness of a warm, generous year, but what matters is the control: dark, generous fruit, ripe tannins and the freshness intact. Bordeaux has a way of intimidating people with its language; a bottle like this is a reminder that Saint-Émilion can still be simple in the best sense of the word.
