Clos Saint-Julien

The estate

Saint-Julien is an old place name at Saint-Émilion. The trade directories of the 19th century listed a Saint-Julien among the first growths of the commune, under the Lacombe-Guadet family and later the Gariteys; that old domain went on under the Guadet name, and the Clos is a separate vineyard on the same ground. Catherine Papon-Nouvel, of the Vignobles J.J. Nouvel, has run it since 1998 from Château Gaillard. The list approved in September 2022 brought Clos Saint-Julien in as a Grand Cru Classé, a rank it had never held.

The vineyard is 1.2 hectares of limestone, the smallest of the 85 on the list, planted 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot, which makes it 1 of the few estates on the list where Cabernet Franc leads. Visits are by appointment.
