Château Garraud

The estate

The Count of Kermartin created the Garraud vineyard in the middle of the 19th century. Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, list A Garraud at Néac under Mme Lacaze from 1868, among the crus bourgeois and first artisans, at 40 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels) in 1874, and from 1898 under Gust. Lacaze and the comtesse de Kermartin. Léon Nony bought it at the end of the 1930s and renovated and enlarged it; Château Treytins followed in the 1950s, his son Michel and grandson Jean-Marc carried on, and the cellars were completely renovated in the 1990s. In 2019 Marie-Laure and Pierre Esnée, whose family group S.D.2.P had worked in hospitality, bought the château and built new concrete vat rooms and aging cellars. Stéphane Derenoncourt is the consulting oenologist, Stéphane Beuret handles operations and Albert Roussel production.

The vines lie on clay, gravel and clay-gravel, more than 80% Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, about 30 years old on average and planted at about 6,000 a hectare; they are pruned double Guyot, green-harvested and grassed with a light hand. The grapes are fully destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled steel vats or in barrel, and the wines age in concrete, in steel or in oak barrels, from 0 to 100% depending on the wine. The estate makes about 210,000 bottles a year across its labels, among them L’Ancien, first made in 1997, Racines carrées, and Château Treytins in Montagne-Saint-Émilion.
