Château de Chambrun

The estate

The Cholet family founded the property between the 2 World Wars as Clos de Chambrun, a name taken from a plot called Champ Brun, the brown field. It later belonged to Jean-Philippe Janoueix, until 2007, and then to Silvio Denz, until 2015, when the owners of Château Moncets, also at Néac, bought it, made it the lead of their 2 estates and set about reviving it. Julien Noël is managing director, Bruno Chaminade cellar master and Nicolas Ballet vineyard manager.

The plots lie on the gravelly clay of Néac, just across the appellation line from the Pomerol plateau, and the vines, mostly Merlot, were replanted from a large massal selection. Since 2009 a single plot at the foot of the church of Néac has made a wine of its own, Le Bourg. The 2021 is 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, from vines of about 52 years at 6,500 vines a hectare; the grapes were sorted by density and brought in by gravity, and the wine aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 80% new and 20% of 1 year, with 12 different toasts from 5 coopers.
