Château Fonréaud

The estate

The name, once written Font-réaux, means royal fountain, and the story goes that a 12th-century king of England stopped to drink at a spring here. The estate itself was pieced together early in the 19th century by Guillaume Van Hemert, consul of Denmark in Bordeaux, through many exchanges of land; William Franck, whose Traité sur les vins du Médoc first appeared in 1824, lists it that year under Duranteau and Van Hemert, at 90 to 100 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels). It passed to the Le Blanc de Mauvezin family in 1832, and Henri Le Blanc de Mauvezin built the château in 1850. In 1885 Lodoïs Le Blanc de Mauvezin left it to Mlle de La Cropte de Chantérac, who married the Marquis de La Tremblaye, Comte de Coulogne. By 1898 Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, ranked it a cru bourgeois supérieur at 100 tonneaux: 180 hectares across Listrac, Moulis and Cussac, 65 of them vines laid out like an amphitheater facing south, which the frosts of 1861, 1873 and 1892 had spared.

When Léo Chanfreau, who had made wine in Algeria, came back to France with his family and bought Fonréaud in 1962, everything had to be rebuilt, and the vineyard was down to 17 hectares in poor condition. The family has since added Château Lestage in Listrac and 2 estates in Moulis, and the next generation, Guillaume and Loïc Chanfreau, runs Fonréaud now. It joined the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux in 1983, was a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in the classification of 2020 and is not in the list of 2025.

The red vineyard is 35 hectares on gravel slopes at 43 meters, a mosaic of gravel over Oligocene clay and limestone, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, at 7,000 vines a hectare; the vines average 22 years, and the oldest plot was planted in 1966. It is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms) at level 3, and Antoine Médeville consults. Légende de Fonréaud is the second wine. The white has a history of its own: the Vicomtesse de Coulogne created Le Cygne de Fonréaud at the start of the 20th century, its vineyard disappeared at the end of the 1950s and was replanted in 1989, and today it is a dry Bordeaux, picked by hand in several passes, pressed in whole bunches, and fermented and aged in barrel on its fine lees.

Listrac can be rustic in lesser years, and Fonréaud is one of its quiet overachievers. The 2015, which I tasted in December 2025, came from a vintage that gave the appellation ripe, velvety tannins and unusually charming fruit: dark berries, warm spice, a fresh lift of cedar and the unmistakable structure of the Médoc, in a wine that gives pleasure without asking for patience.
