Château Moulin de la Rose

The estate

The name recalls a mill that once stood here and the Chevalier Larose, who in the 18th century owned the great growth next door, Château Gruaud Larose. Guy Delon bought Moulin de la Rose in 1971, and his children run it now, Jean-François as technical director and Guylène as administrative director; the family is also behind Château Ségur de Cabanac. With about 5 hectares surrounded by classified growths, the estate has earned its nickname, the Lilliputian of Saint-Julien.

The vines grow on homogeneous Garonne gravel, 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, planted at 9,000 to the hectare and 30 years old on average. The soil is plowed and the vines pruned hard; the grapes are picked by hand and sorted in the vineyard, crushed and left about 3 weeks on the skins in 5 temperature-controlled steel vats. The wine then spends 20 months in French oak barrels, racked every 3 months and fined in its second winter.
