Château Haut-Lagrange

The estate

Francis Boutemy created Château Haut-Lagrange in 1989 at Léognan, 15 kilometers south of Bordeaux, and the Boutemy family has run it ever since. The estate is young; the site is not. Old maps show vines here as far back as 1764.

The 8.43 hectares lie on deep gravel, which drains well and helps the grapes ripen. The red is planted 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, the white 50% Sauvignon and 50% Sémillon. The estate is certified Terra Vitis and Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms) at level 3, since 2017: pheromones replace pesticides against the grape moths, certified organic or biocontrol products are used when a treatment cannot be avoided, and the soil is worked mechanically. The red and white Château Haut-Lagrange run to about 40,000 and 7,000 bottles a year. Beside them come Constellation des Sens, a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged in barrels of 500 liters and made in small quantities, and Plaisir by Haut-Lagrange, made wholly in vats, without new oak.
