Château Haut-Batailley

The estate

Batailley was divided in 1941 between 2 brothers. Francis Borie took the part that became Château Haut-Batailley and Marcel kept the rest, so the rank Haut-Batailley carries was awarded to a property that no longer exists in the shape it was classified in. The Borie family held it until March 31, 2017, when the Cazes family, of Château Lynch-Bages, bought it from the des Brest-Borie family. Jean-Charles Cazes, who has directed the family business since 2006, is co-owner and general director.

The estate covers about 40 hectares on deep Garonne gravel. At the sale 22 were in production, with vines 35 years old on average, and 19 more carried the right to the Pauillac appellation without a vine on them. A planting program began in 2018 to bring them in, which makes this a vineyard still growing rather than settled, and the proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot are moving with it. The wine is raised for 16 months in French oak, 70% of it new, and Verso is the second wine.
