Château de Reignac

A 16th-century château south of Saint-Loubès, first of its côtes in the trade books of 1868 and owned since 1990 by Yves and Stéphanie Vatelot, whose Grand Vin (the estate’s first wine) is a Bordeaux Supérieur.

The estate

The seigneur Baude de Peyron built the present château in the 16th century, and when the trade books began to list the wines of Saint-Loubès, Reignac came first. Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, put Château Reignac first among the côtes and plateaus of Saint-Loubès from 1868, under Chaline, at 150 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels). The widow Th. Labat held it by 1898, and in 1922 Mme M. Carlsberg-Labat, with 120 tonneaux of red and 30 of white. That year the guide described a domain of 102 hectares, 33 of them vines on rises of clayey gravel, all in fine varieties with Cabernet Sauvignon foremost, and ranked its very fragrant reds among the best of the district; the white vineyard, then being rebuilt, gave a sweet white much sought by the trade.

Yves and Stéphanie Vatelot bought Reignac in 1990. It stands in the west of the Entre-deux-Mers, on ground between 22 and 43 meters above sea level, in 3 zones: deep gravels of the Mindel glaciation on the summit, clay of the Fronsac molasses on a hillside facing southeast, and marl and limestone of Castillon to the south. The grounds hold a greenhouse signed by Gustave Eiffel, a lake dug in 1993 and a 16th-century dovecote restored in 1998 as a tower for blind tastings.

The Grand Vin de Reignac is 67% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc, from a vineyard of 49 hectares, certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms) since 2017; Michel Rolland, who died in March 2026, was its consulting oenologist. BALTHVS, 100% Merlot, is fermented and aged in new French oak barrels, and 500 cases were made in 2006. Château de Reignac is the second wine; R de Reignac, mostly Cabernet Franc, spends 9 months in vat with no barrel; and there are a white and a rosé.

The engineer who challenged Bordeaux's hierarchy

Yves Vatelot bought Château Reignac in 1990 and used blind tastings to challenge Bordeaux's hierarchy. In 1998, a tasting of 200 Bordeaux bottles placed one of his wines among the top 15, according to Vatelot.
