Château Grand Village

The estate

Grand Village is at Mouillac, northwest of Fronsac, and it is where the Guinaudeaus of Château Lafleur in Pomerol live: the place their line of winegrowers comes from, and the address of the company that makes all their wines. The red, Le Grand Village Rouge, was founded in 1650 by Jacques Verdery, a direct ancestor of the family. A Jacques Verdery, mayor of the commune, still held part of Grand-Village when Édouard Féret, co-author of Bordeaux et ses vins, the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, listed its 2 holdings in his Statistique générale of the Gironde of 1874, and Féret’s volume on the Libourne district gave him 30 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels) of red and 25 of white in 1897. By 1901 the owner was Greloud, a former notary, and in 1922 the guide listed the Domaine du Grand-Village under Dr Louis Charron, mayor, with about 100 hectares of vines, meadows and plowland, worked with a motor plow.

Sylvie and Jacques Guinaudeau added the white, Le Grand Village Blanc, in 1990, from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon; both wines come from clay and limestone, and Julie and Baptiste Guinaudeau make them with the rest of the family and the team. The house receives no visitors. The white lives in the shadow of the red, and in my view it is 1 of the quiet secrets of Bordeaux: the 2022, which I tasted in January 2026, had bright citrus, white peach and a little floral lift over a saline, mineral core, with energy and clarity but also texture and a calm confidence. It carries the same precision the family brings to Pomerol, and it rewards attention.

Grand Village makes 2 of the 6 wines of the family, with Lafleur, Les Pensées, Les Perrières and Les Champs Libres. On August 24, 2025 the Guinaudeaus announced that all 6 would leave their appellations and be labeled Vin de France from the 2025 vintage, which turns what was a Bordeaux Supérieur red and a Bordeaux white into 2 wines that carry only their own name.
