The name “Beaucaillou” translates to “beautiful stones,” a nod to the large pebbles that define this château’s terroir. The 2008 vintage might be remembered as Bordeaux’s last affordable vintage before prices soared, but it also holds personal significance for me as the year I married my wife (therealnanda), making this big, bold and opulent wine all the more memorable, just what you’d hope for from Ducru-Beaucaillou. The 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot blend is still developing, but it’s already showing signs of greatness. With intense aromas and a structure that promises longevity, this was a strong contender for the wine of the night.
