Château Bujan

The estate

Bujan was already a cru bourgeois at the end of the 19th century. Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, list it among the crus bourgeois of Gauriac from 1893, under A. Buard and the widow Sou; by 1898 it made 30 tonneaux (the old Bordeaux measure of a crop, 900 liters, or 4 barrels), under Constant and the widow Sou, and in 1922 Constant held it alone. Its modern revival began in 1987 with Marielle and Pascal Méli. Since November 2021 it has belonged to Laurent and Delphine Jonquière: he runs the estate, she looks after the house and the welcome, Christophe makes and ages the wine, and Lahcen has tended the vines for more than 20 years. A holiday house for 14, with 6 bedrooms and a pool, looks over the vineyard.

The 17 hectares face due south, on the Fronsac molasse and on limestone gravel, and the estate is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms). The red Château Bujan is 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc; Esprit de Bujan is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and N°2 is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. The whites are Bujan Blanc, of Sauvignon Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, and Esprit de Bujan Blanc, aged entirely in barrel, and Les Fontenelles is a pressed rosé of 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot.
