Château Bégot

The estate

Joachim Haas grew up between the Bordeaux region and the Basque Country and learned viticulture from 2013 alongside growers of the Bordeaux region, then settled at Bégot, in Lansac, with his parents and grandparents as partners in the estate; his cousin drew the label of the Bégotin. The vineyard is more than 200 years old, was worked by the same family for several generations and has kept its old vines.

It faces due south, on clay, limestone and yellow gravel, and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec; Haas works it alone. The estate was certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (High Environmental Value, the French state’s environmental certification for farms), level 3, in 2019, has farmed organically since 2020 and was certified organic in 2023, and the rows are weeded only by plow. Château Bégot, 85% Merlot and 5% each of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, ferments in stainless steel, goes through malolactic in barrel and ages 12 months in oak. Fleur de Bégot, of the same blend, is picked by hand and made and aged in stainless steel; Bégotin, also of the same blend, sees oak only in part; L’Arrosé is a rosé of pure Merlot, sold as Vin de France.
