Château Le Chemin 2017, Pomerol

The signature on the label belongs to François Despagne, who also runs Grand Corbin Despagne in Saint-Émilion. Working across both appellations gives a winemaker an unusual perspective: the clay and gravel of Pomerol against the limestone and sand of Saint-Émilion, Merlot expressing itself through two very different lenses on the same Right Bank.

From the Bordeaux archives: The Despagne family has been making wine in the Libournais since the 17th century, one of the longest continuous family winemaking lineages on the Right Bank. At a time when corporate ownership and investment funds have reshaped the landscape of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, family estates of this scale and continuity are increasingly rare. Each generation's decision not to sell is itself a statement about what wine means beyond commerce.

Le Chemin is a small Pomerol property, and 2017 was not an easy vintage anywhere in Bordeaux. What comes through here is restraint rather than power, a wine shaped by careful selection and a light hand in the cellar. In a year like this, that matters more than ambition.

There is something appropriately understated about drinking Pomerol over a plate of charcuterie with friends. No ceremony required. The wine is built more on texture than spectacle, and the setting lets it speak on its own terms.
