Vieux Château Saint-André

The estate

Jean-Claude Berrouet joined Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1964, came to be in charge of all the Moueix family’s vineyards and made 44 vintages of Petrus. In 1979, alongside that work, he began an estate of his own near the church of Saint-Georges, on the clay and limestone of Montagne-Saint-Émilion: Vieux Château Saint-André, then 4.5 hectares. His younger son, Jean-François Berrouet, known as Jeff, has run the family’s vineyards since 2002, with his father’s advice. The family also owns Château Samion in Lalande-de-Pomerol and, since 2019, Château Hyon la Fleur and Château Bonneau.

The vineyard is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, on clay and limestone and on clay and silt, planted at 6,000 vines a hectare and farmed without chemical weedkillers. Each plot is fermented apart in temperature-controlled concrete vats, with pumping over only, and the wine goes into French oak barrels in February, 20% of them new for the 2022. There is no house recipe: the family makes each vintage in its own way.
