From the barrels it began making at Saint-Romain, in Burgundy, in 1910, the François family has built a listed group that owns 2 cooperages in Bordeaux and supplies oak to the bourbon trade.

The house

The family began making barrels at Saint-Romain, in the Côte-d’Or, in 1910, under Joseph François, the grandfather of Jean François. Jean François joined in 1959 and ran the business from 1972. Since 1989 Demptos, at Saint-Caprais-de-Bordeaux, has belonged to the family.

The group grew by buying. It bought the stave mill Sogibois in 1999, AP John in 2001, Classic Oak in 2006 and Radoux in 2012. A vat works of its own came in 2002, the Foudrerie Joseph François, named for the founder. In 2008 it took over Speyside Cooperage, at Craigellachie, which the Taylor family had founded in 1947. A second house in the Gironde followed in 2019, Tonnellerie Vincent Darnajou, at Montagne; Rémond came in 2022 and Petitrenaud in 2024. Its workshops run from Saint-Romain, Saint-Caprais, Brive, Jonzac, Villers-Cotterêts and Ladoix-Serrigny in France to the United States, Spain, Scotland, Ireland, Hungary, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and China. In the United States its stave mills supply American oak to the bourbon trade.

The shares are listed on Euronext Paris, and the François family holds more than 70% of them. Jérôme François chairs the management board and Jean-Robert François the supervisory board. In the year to April 30, 2026 the group’s sales came to more than 312 million euros, about 165 million of them from wine. On September 7, 2026 the group launched TFF Upcycling, which takes back barrels that wine estates no longer use, restores them where needed and sells them again in France and abroad. The company still carries the name of the Burgundy cooperage it grew from, Tonnellerie François Frères.
