How to read this

Capitals mark the stressed syllable. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.

The wine business that 9 Castel brothers and sisters set up in 1949 went on to buy Barton & Guestier in 2010 and to join Suntory as an owner of Château Beychevelle in 2011.

The house

The 9 Castel brothers and sisters set up their wine business in 1949, and in 1957 the family bought its first estate, Château de Goëlane, a Bordeaux Supérieur. Land followed the trade. Château d’Arcins, in the Haut-Médoc, came in 1971, and Château Montlabert, in Saint-Émilion, in 2008; the list approved in 2022 made Montlabert a Grand Cru Classé for the first time.

The house was built on brands, and Malesan and Baron de Lestac were counted in 2011 among the best-selling brands of Bordeaux.

It also went to China. Castel had already built a winery at Langfang, near Beijing, when it signed agreements with the Chinese wine company Changyu in Beijing on August 8, 2001. Changyu was to take 49% of the Langfang winery, and Castel 30% of a winery Changyu was setting up at Yantai. Castel’s name in China is Kasidaile (卡思黛乐); Castel Frères filed it as a mark there on March 10, 2009, and in 2010 filed Kasidaile Famille Castel depuis 1949. In 2025 Castel Frères had sales of 622 million euros. It works from Blanquefort, just north of Bordeaux, and Castel-Vins, the group’s parent company in France, is its president.

In July 2010 Castel Frères bought Barton & Guestier from Diageo, with its brands and Château Magnol. Then, in 2011, it joined Suntory as an owner of Château Beychevelle, a fourth growth of Saint-Julien.
