How to read this

Capitals mark the stressed syllable. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.

At Archiac, in the cognac country, the cooperage Roger Allary opened in 1953 has made casks as small as 1 liter and conical vats as large as 45,000 liters.

The house

Roger Allary opened his cooperage at Archiac, in Charente-Maritime, in 1953. From the 1960s it made casks for cognac, of 350 to 400 liters, and small casks of 1 to 28 liters. His son Jacky took it over when he retired, in 1992, the year the present company was formed. From the 1990s the house also made barrels for wine and large conical vats of 1,000 to 45,000 liters. Since September 9, 2026 Cassandre David Allary and Gauthier David Allary have been co-managers beside Jacky Allary.

Allary holds the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, which the French state gives to firms keeping a rare craft alive. On June 26, 2025, when the state marked 20 years of the label, it opened its workshop to visitors. From Archiac the house sells in more than 30 countries.

Its barrels are on record at 2 estates of Bordeaux. For the 2022 vintage Château Lafargue, in Pessac-Léognan, fermented its Sauvignon gris for a trial in Allary barrels of 2020. Château Kirwan, the Margaux third growth, counted Allary among its partner cooperages for the 2025 vintage, chosen so that the grain and the toast of its barrels vary. Those are the records of those 2 years.
