How to read this

Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “zh” is the s in “measure”. “ahn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.

Regent is a German red crossed in 1967 from Diana and Chambourcin; DNA markers show it is a parent of Vidoc, a resistant red bred by INRA and the JKI and now planted in the Gironde.

Regent is a red grape bred in Germany by Gerhardt Alleweldt at Geilweilerhof, the grape breeding institute that VIVC lists under the Julius Kühn-Institut. He crossed Diana with Chambourcin in 1967, DNA markers agree with his record, and VIVC gives March 4, 1994 as its date of protection. Aleksandra Burdziej, in a 2020 doctoral thesis on grapevine metabolism, names Regent among the hybrids, resistant to low temperatures or to various diseases, on which Polish vineyards are mainly based.

Regent enters the Bordeaux family tree through Vidoc. DNA markers show that Vidoc is a cross of Regent and a selection numbered Mtp 3082-1-42, made by INRA and the Julius Kühn-Institut in 2000 (VIVC). Vidoc carries 2 resistance genes against downy mildew and 2 against powdery mildew, and was registered in the French catalog in January 2018 (INRAE). The arrêté of August 16, 2023 admitted it among the red grapes of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur, and a 2023 presentation by the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture counted about 37 ha. No record places Regent itself in the Gironde.
