White grape
Jurançon Blanc
How to read this
Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “zh” is the s in “measure”. “ew” is “ee” said with rounded lips. “ahn” and “ohn” are nasal vowels: say them through the nose, with no n. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.
Jurançon Blanc is a productive white grape of southwest France, thought to be a cross of Folle Blanche and Pruéras; the Gironde books record it from 1874 to 1922, mostly beside the Enrageat.
Jurançon Blanc is a white grape of southwest France. The pedigree diagram in Wine Grapes (Robinson, Harding, and Vouillamoz, 2012) draws it as a cross of Folle Blanche and Pruéras, 2 whites the old Gironde knew, the first as Enrageat; the sheet cites no study, so the cross stands as a proposal. In 1893 the guide of Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, gave its other names, Plant-de-Dame blanc and Sans-Pareil in the Gironde, the Gers, and the Lot-et-Garonne, and judged it “very productive, but common.” The Gironde “jurançon blanc” is most likely today’s Jurançon Blanc, a likely identity on name and synonyms.
In the Gironde it grew beside the Enrageat. In 1874 the guide gave the white wines of the Entre-deux-Mers as three quarters enrageat and one quarter sémillon, malvoisie, blanquette, “jurançon blanc”, and other grapes, and the same year Édouard Féret’s Statistique of the Gironde found the white vineyard of the domaine du Sourd planted in enrageât and jurançon. In 1901 and again in 1922 the clos Gassiot, entirely replanted by its owners, listed jurançon blanc after sauvignon, sémillon, muscadelle, and folle blanche, and before blanquette. The 1922 edition still names the Jurançon-Blanc among the lesser white grapes of the Gironde.
Oldest record in my library: “Jurançon blanc”, 1854, in Alexandre-Pierre Odart, Ampélographie universelle (Lot-et-Garonne); in the Gironde, Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, Bordeaux et ses vins, 3rd edition, 1874 (Entre-deux-Mers)
