Château les Jonqueyres

The estate

Les Jonqueyres made its name through 1 man. From the 1980s Pascal Montaut farmed organically and made his wine without additives, and his wines won him a solid reputation in France and abroad. In June 2020 Château Bonnange, owned by Michael Huang, bought the estate, with Pascal Montaut staying on through the transition. Paul-Emmanuel Boulmé, who grew up in Blaye and directs the winemaking at Bonnange, now carries his work on.

The vineyard covers about 10 hectares at Saint-Paul and Saint-Martin-Lacaussade, with vines planted between the 1930s and the 1990s. No chemical weedkiller or insecticide has touched it for 40 years: the grass grows as it will and the soil is worked mechanically. The grapes are picked by hand and fermented with the natural yeasts of the vineyard, with as few interventions and outside inputs as possible, and the wines age mostly in vat with a moderate share of barrel. Château les Jonqueyres is a Merlot; the second wine, If des Jonqueyres, adds Cabernet Sauvignon.
