Maison Lateyron

The estate

Jean Lateyron, known as Abel, founded his trading house in 1897 on what became the family’s craft, the prise de mousse: making sparkling wine from the wines of the Libournais. The name was tied to sparkling wine from the start. In a supplement of 1901 Édouard Féret, co-author of the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, noted that Yves Lateyron, a grower at Troquard in Saint-Georges, turned part of his crop into sparkling wine, and in 1908 and again in 1922 the guides gave Jean Lateyron, at La Maçonne in Montagne, a heading of his own for sparkling wine. His son Paul settled at Montagne and in 1927 had Siméon Lacour dig the gallery that leads to the present cellars, large underground galleries beneath the vineyards. Claude and Nadine Lateyron followed, and Lionel and Corinne Lateyron, the 4th generation, took over in 2009. The house was accredited by Ecocert for its sparkling wines from 1993, and the family’s own vineyards, in Montagne-Saint-Émilion, Puisseguin-Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, are certified organic.

The crémants are made by the traditional method and rest in the galleries. The Lateyron Blanc Brut is 70% Sémillon and 30% Cabernet Franc, 18 months on its lees in bottle; the Rosé Brut is 100% Cabernet Franc; Paulian, 60% Sémillon and 40% Cabernet Franc, spends 36 months on its lees; Lucie, an organic brut nature, is 100% Sémillon; and Abel, a 2016 brut nature of 80% Sémillon and 20% Cabernet Franc, spends at least 5 years on its lees. The still wines include Château Tour Calon, about 11 hectares in Montagne-Saint-Émilion with Merlot more than 60 years old.
