Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “ohn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. “ny” is the ny in “canyon”. The recording is the reference.

The Lestapis brothers came from Gascony to the Bordeaux wine trade in 1818, and their house was among those whose heads set about rebuilding the city’s commerce after Waterloo.

The house

Théophile Malvezin, whose history of the Bordeaux trade appeared in 1892, names Lestapis among the heads of the great merchant houses who set about rebuilding the commerce of the city after Waterloo. Nearly all of them were members, at one time or another, of its Chamber of Commerce. In November 1829 a Lestapis took his seat on the Tribunal de commerce, the court of judges the Bordeaux merchants elected from their own ranks. The house stayed with the family for 5 generations and came to concentrate on the wines of Bordeaux. When no one in the family wished to carry it on, it was sold.

Aurélien Révillon, who came from the same Gascon world of Armagnac and the wines of the Southwest, took the house over in July 2013. Frédéric Lavergne, a man of the Bordeaux trade, joined him as managing director in 2015 and became his partner. In August 2022 control passed to Wine Around, a Bordeaux wine company led by Gianni Stoppani.

The house sells the grands crus en primeur (sold as futures, while the wine is still in barrel), a range of smaller Bordeaux châteaux it holds alone, Armagnacs and wines of the Southwest. It keeps a large stock of older vintages with a partner warehouse. Wine Around absorbed it in December 2024. In January 2025 Wine Around itself took the house’s name, and became Lestapis et Compagnie.
