How to read this

Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “ohn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.

In 1992 Lucien Lurton divided his 10 Bordeaux estates among his 10 children, and that year the children set up a merchant house of their own at Arsac.

The house

The house grew out of a family of growers. Léonce Récapet, born at Branne in 1858, took on his family’s liqueur business and bought wine estates, Château Brane-Cantenac among them in 1925. His daughter Denise had married François Lurton in 1923. Their son Lucien took over Brane-Cantenac in the 1950s and went on buying until he held 10 estates.

In 1992 he divided them among his 10 children. That year the children set up a merchant house of their own at Arsac, in the Margaux appellation, under the name Lucien Lurton & Fils; it trades today as La Passion des Terroirs. The house filed La Passion des Terroirs as a trademark in February 1999. In 2013 it shipped more than 5 million bottles a year from a range of more than 400 wines. Its business fell into 3 parts of one third each: the wines of the Lurton family, wines of the middle of the market, and the classed growths.

The house marked its 30th year in 2022. Lucien Lurton died in 2023, at 97, and Mathieu Le Treut has been the managing director since March 2024. The family company at its head, LLA Gestion et Participations, was formed at Arsac in June 1992; Gonzague Lurton is its president, and 4 of his brothers and sisters sit on its board. Of Lucien Lurton’s 10 children, 5 now sit on the family company that heads the house first named for him.
