House of the past
Journu Frères, Kappelhoff et Cie
How to read this
Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “zh” is the s in “measure”. “ew” is “ee” said with rounded lips. “ohn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. “ny” is the ny in “canyon”. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.
The head of this Bordeaux house owned Château Saint-Pierre, in Saint-Julien, with his brother-in-law, and the house bought its wine until 1916, the 10th year running that it shared the Château Margaux crop.
The house
Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, name M. Kappelhoff in 1883 as the head of the house of the Journu brothers. By 1886 the firm carried the 2 names: Journu Frères, Kappelhoff et Cie. Kappelhoff also held land. With his brother-in-law Bontemps-Dubarry he owned Château Saint-Pierre, in Saint-Julien, and the house bought its wine until the vintage of 1916.
In 1890 the house took the crop of Marcelin Clauzel’s share of Château Citran. It also bought widely among the classed growths. A book on the classed growths of the Médoc, printed in London in 1920, places it at Langoa in 1898 and 1913 and at Marquis d’Alesme Becker in 1912 and 1914. At Mouton d’Armailhacq, today Château d’Armailhac, it bought part of 1906. From 1907 to 1916 it was among the buyers of Château Margaux, with Eschenauer et Cie and Schröder et Schÿler, and it shared the Lafite vintages of 1917, 1918 and 1919 with other houses.
The family stayed on the land. In 1922 Lieutenant-Colonel Bontemps-Kappelhoff owned Saint-Pierre-Bontemps, and Jean Kappelhoff-Lançon owned Château d’Orange-de-Saint-Pierre, at Ludon.
