How to read this

Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “zh” is the s in “measure”. “ahnn” ends in a real n. The recording is the reference.

In 1990 the house Paul Joanne founded in 1862 gave itself over to the grands crus of Bordeaux, and its cellars at Carignan-de-Bordeaux hold more than 5 million bottles.

The house

Paul Joanne opened his house at 20 rue Laseppe, in Bordeaux, in 1862. About 100 years later it passed by marriage: Pierre Castéja, the husband of Christiane Joanne, took over the management in 1964. In 1976 the next generation, led by Pierre Antoine Castéja, moved the house out of the city to Carignan-de-Bordeaux, to the east.

Joanne gave itself over entirely to the grands crus of Bordeaux in 1990, and sells them to merchants around the world. It built out from there: Joanne US for the American market in 2009, Joanne Rare Wines for fine wines from other countries and regions in 2021, and Joanne PremieR for the restaurants and wine shops of France in 2024. Its cellars at Carignan hold more than 5 million bottles.

In 2022 a group of private investors joined the capital: Claude Bébéar, the families of Norbert Dentressangle and Philippe Donnet, and Hugues Lechanoine, formerly chief executive of Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who took over the management. The investors hold the house through their company, Royce WS, which has chaired it since April 24, 2023, with Hugues Lechanoine at its head. Pierre Antoine Castéja, who sits on the supervisory board of Royce WS, kept a minority stake in 2022, 46 years after he had led the house to Carignan.
