Dubos Frères
How to read this
Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “ew” is “ee” said with rounded lips. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.
In June 1892 Château Cantemerle went by licitation (a court-ordered sale among co-owners) to the father of the Dubos brothers, whose Bordeaux house Jean-Baptiste Dubos had founded in 1785.
The house
Jean-Baptiste Dubos founded the house in Bordeaux in 1785, and in the 19th century, as Dubos frères, it was buying in the Médoc. Charles Cocks and Édouard Féret, whose Bordeaux et ses vins was the reference book of the Bordeaux trade, recorded one of its purchases. The 1891 crop of Marcelin Clauzel’s part of Château Citran, at Avensan, went at the highest prices to Dubos frères.
In June 1892 Château Cantemerle, the fifth growth of Macau, went by licitation to the father of the Dubos brothers. The guide of 1893 printed it under Théophile-J. Dubos, of the house Dubos frères, and Maurice Thomas. A book on the classed growths of the Médoc printed in London in 1920 shows the estate with the next generation, Pierre-J. and Bernard-J. Dubos, and names the house among those that bought Château Bouscaut and Château Sigalas Rabaud.
The Dubos family ran the house until 1989, when Philippe Dubos, the last of them in it, stepped back. In 1997 Philippe Cottin, who had directed Château Mouton Rothschild for close to 30 years, bought it with his children; Serica, the family holding created that year, has been its president since 2016. Robert Cottin has been a managing director since 2016 and Emmanuel Cottin since November 2020. The house sells the classed growths, en primeur (sold as futures, while the wine is still in barrel) and in bottle, and keeps more than 1,500,000 bottles in a warehouse of 2,700 square meters.
