Capitals mark the stressed syllable. “ew” is “ee” said with rounded lips. “ohn” is a nasal vowel: say it through the nose, with no n. The French r comes from the back of the throat. The recording is the reference.

A little over 80 wine merchant houses handle more than 98% of the trade in Gironde wine, and this is their association, the négoce’s voice inside the CIVB.

The house

After the First World War, with prices falling, merchants and growers came together in the Union de la Propriété et du Commerce. A Syndicat des négociants (merchants who buy from the châteaux and sell on) en vins et spiritueux de Bordeaux et de la Gironde was at work from 1935 to 1937, when the first appellations were being defined. In 1943 the regional administration set up the first interprofessional committee of Bordeaux wine, from which the CIVB grew.

Bordeaux Négoce, the Union des Maisons de Bordeaux, sits on the executive bureau of the CIVB and on the regional committee of the INAO through the Fédération des Négociants de Bordeaux et Libourne. It works closely with the growers’ federation. Allan Sichel led it from 2003, Georges Haushalter, director general of the Compagnie Médocaine des Grands Crus at Blanquefort, from December 3, 2008, and Lionel Chol from 2016. Philippe Tapie succeeded him on April 10, 2024. President of Haut Médoc Sélection, a Bordeaux house that works in the grands crus and that he founded, he chairs the association’s board, and Catherine Duperat is its director. In July 2026 he also became co-president of the CIVB, beside the grower Bernard Farges.

The association made Bordeaux Négoce its trademark in 2019. From June 22 to 25, 2023 about 100 of the houses took part in its Paroles de Négociants during Bordeaux Fête le Vin, the city’s wine festival. The houses it speaks for have about 3 billion euros of turnover and more than 3,500 direct jobs. In February 2024 the association and the Syndicat des Maisons de Cognac, which gathers 42 houses, announced a Fédération des Maisons de Bordeaux et de Cognac, to speak for 122 houses together.
