Villaris is a white grape bred in Germany in 1984 from Sirius and Vidal Blanc; the breeder’s record makes it a parent of Floréal, a resistant white now planted in the Gironde.
Villaris is a white grape bred in Germany at Geilweilerhof, the grape breeding institute that VIVC lists under the Julius Kühn-Institut, by Rudolf Eibach and Reinhard Töpfer, who crossed it in 1984; VIVC gives 2004 as its year of protection. The breeders recorded Sirius and Villard Blanc as its parents. DNA markers later showed that the second parent is Vidal Blanc, and VIVC now lists the pedigree as Sirius × Vidal Blanc.
Villaris enters the Bordeaux family tree through Floréal, a white bred for resistance to downy and powdery mildew by Christophe-Joseph Schneider at INRA Colmar, crossed in 2002 and registered in the French catalog in January 2018. The breeder’s record gives Floréal’s parents as Villaris and a selection numbered Mtp 3159-2-12; VIVC holds no marker check yet, so this link stays proposed. The arrêté of August 16, 2023 admitted Floréal among the white grapes of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Supérieur, and a 2023 presentation by the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture counted about 21 ha. No record places Villaris itself in the Gironde.
